Social Media Step Back

Last March, my oncologist told me that the probability of my surviving a PALB2 Breast Cancer cancer diagnosis (though early stages) without massive intervention would be about 20%. Twelve months and aforementioned interventions later, it's more like 98% to 99%. This change in percentage outlook has required work, soul searching thinking and extensive research.   It's no surprise that I have been thinking about what is important to me.  One change for me has been my use of social media, email and the internet in general. Being “connected” virtually has become a lot less important to me. It's got a [...]

Season for Self Care

We are now settling into Autumn, and if you are in the Northern hemisphere, Spring!  Both are beautiful transitional months.  It's time to set ourselves up for the the season ahead. This month, I plan to have more focus, space and peace. More time for mind wandering, more health and wealth. More time with friends, more creativity, more fun! … and not necessarily in that order! Here’s how I am going to do it despite the constant stream of grim news in the world. Looking after ourselves creates a solid foundation from which we can help others. Real Self Care [...]

Wake up and go to bed!

This note is about a very important topic.  It's about You and Your sleep. ? It seems that lots of us aren't sleeping well, let alone resting enough. “Resting” while binge watching your favorite show on Netflix or infini-scrolling social media feeds doesn’t count. Most of us are chronically sleep-deprived or experience poor-quality sleep.  Even me! It seems no-one is immune to this pandemic of restlessness.  The causes vary widely. Our brains crave certainty and when uncertainty abounds like it does today, we experience overwhelm and anxiety. The first thing that takes the hit is our sleep which effects our ability [...]

Making Space

How to clear some mental space in your life. School and the working year of 2022 have started here in the southern hemisphere and already I can see and feel the growing sense of overwhelm in people. Some schools are being closed down due to COVID outbreaks adding complexity to the work / kids juggling act. It's not easy having split loyalties. If you haven't done it before, working from home can be challenging. There's an art to building a structure that works when working from home. Homeschooling is not easy at the best of times and requires a good [...]

It’s OK not to be OK

This is an important realization because sometimes living through discomfort enables growth. Something unexpected that happened to me this year. Last March I was fortunately diagnosed with a hereditary gene fault called PALB2, which causes cancer in three areas: breasts, ovaries and the pancreas. At the time I didn't think this was very fortunate as the diagnosis comes with a whole lot of preventative surgery to remove those areas of the body which may develop a triggered cancer. If that was not enough, two weeks later I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer with lymph node involvement. I was too late [...]

The Power of Pause

Did you know that just five seconds is all that it takes to change your life? How many times have you done something, say like signing up for something online, only to shortly thereafter wish you hadn’t… or discovered in the middle of doing that something that you are not longer “on task” on something that is important to you. We live in a world of “Faster, Harder, MORE” which leaves precious little time to process what we’ve seen or heard. We’re expected to respond post-haste without deeply thinking about the ramifications of how we’re about to respond. When confronting [...]
